Mad Men and Gossip Girl feature two of fall's biggest trends.

From the early days of cinema, women have always looked to their favorite movie stars for ways to dress, style their hair or put on their makeup. Since the 1950s, television has supplied a similar function, and often in a more realistic, everyday manner.

For example, women in the early 1960s coveted Laura Petrie’s (Mary Tyler Moore) capri pants on The Dick Van Dyke show, while the abundance of 1980s shows like Dynasty established many clothing and hair looks of that era.

Television still has a large amount of style influence today. Obvious examples are creative, fashion-themed reality shows such as Project Runway or The Rachel Zoe Project, but there are also two key current fall accessory and clothing trends from scripted shows.

Headbands - Gossip Girl

In addition to the designer clothes and handbags, recent magazines have routinely pointed out the use of headbands on the characters of Gossip Girl, particularly preppy Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meister). This makes sense for the female characters on the show -- after all, they’re high school students. But can adults get away with the look?

According to current fashion, the answer is yes. The key to wearing headbands without looking like a teenager (unless one is a teenager, then go ahead) is to pick fabrics that look more adult – think leather or suede. Leather accessories in general are big for fall.

Jeweled headbands can be good for nighttime; for a more mature look, try to find a headband with gems (similar to looks seen on current flats) as opposed to glitter or sequins.

Sleek Dresses - Mad Men

"Mad Men-esque” is becoming a fashion descriptor. Banana Republic created an autumn line based on looks from the show and era. Most of the women’s clothes that they showed were fitted, simple dresses, in neutrals such as gray. Although the three main female characters on the show – Betty, Peggy and Joan – dress quite differently, most of the Banana Republic looks screamed “Joan”.

They are not the only store that features the look. Dresses have been shown more frequently each season (designer Spring 2010 shows confirm they aren’t going out of fashion anytime soon) and the sleek, not-too-tight, simple dress is flattering on everyone.

What accessories to put with these dresses? Combine a structured handbag and heels to complete the retro look, or modernize it with funky boots and a tote. If the dress has a simple necklace, a chunky necklace is a pretty compliment.
