Accessory gifts are creative, flattering and relatively inexpensive whether they are store bought or DIY.

There have been numerous newspaper articles and television specials this year promoting how to achieve holiday spirit on a budget. Some families are opting to forgo gift exchanges this year for financial reasons, but there are still circumstances in which one wishes to give a present, especially to younger members of the family.

One of the great things about giving fashionable accessories is that they can make a grand statement for very little money. It just takes a little thought and creativity to buy or make the ideal gift.

Store Bought Gifts

For those coveting a designer bag – but are aghast at the prices – consider the fact that many designers, from Coach to Marc by Marc Jacobs, have lesser-priced small versions of their signature look, usually in the form of wristlets or even coin purses. These give the look and feel of the designer without the huge price tag.

Drugstore makeup can be just as flattering as department store brands. A pretty pouch filled with eye shadow, lipstick and nail polish appeals to any girlie girl.

With a little searching, inexpensive hair accessories are fairly easy to find. An assortment of barrettes, hair bands and sparkly clips presented in a small jewelry box or small travel bag is a nice gift.

Homemade and DIY Gifts

For those that prefer crafts or a DIY gift, try this gift (taken from an idea found at Planet Blue) – in a tiny pot, put in some faux grass or styrofoam, then stick barrettes into the pot as if they are flowers growing out of it (barrettes with fake flowers on the end of them work especially well.) To personalize even further, paint the pot with a pattern that appeals to the recipient, from a harlequin pattern ro a night sky scene to feminine hearts (open hearts, not filled in, tend to look more sophisticated.)

Another option is to find a small, plain bag (a soft bucket shape works best) and personalize with some tulle. Simply wrap the tulle around the bag a desired number of times and secure at the edges with clear glue or with carefully placed decorative pins. Generally, darker tulle looks better over a lighter base (light tulle against a dark color can make the tulle look muddy.) Tone on tone is also appealing.

It’s the presentation that can make a gift extra special. In a flat box, create a faux “Japanese lunch” by placing a pair of chopsticks (ones meant to put in hair, not eat with) along with a few different hair accessories in place of food. Add a small soy sauce dish for the purpose of keeping jewelry on a bedside table.
