Money is tight these days for a lot of people but it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to freshen up your wardrobe for spring - all it takes is the right accessories.
Ahhh accessories – one of the easiest and least expensive ways to freshen up your wardrobe. So with the new season now upon us, what are the best accessories to get your look into Spring 2009? Read on to discover the only accessories you need to have this season. And on the plus side, these items have staying power, so you can wear them for months and years to come.
Bracelets, Earrings, and Belts
Statement Necklace – Extra long strands looped and layered or a bold collar, spring’s necklaces are meant to be noticed. But since these pieces are so bold, please keep the rest of your look simple.
Bracelets, Bangles, and Cuffs – More is merrier when it comes to decorating your wrists. Layer several in different widths and materials to create a unique look. Bracelets are a great way to add pop to an otherwise conservative suit jacket or cardigan – just be sure to keep the sleeves pushed up.
Big, Bold Earrings – Chandeliers are once again swinging from the ears of the world’s most fashionable women, so get ready to dust off the chandelier earrings you purchased a few years ago. If the chandelier shape is not your cup of tea, you can still embrace this big trend with over-sized hoops and extra-long shoulder dusters. Try some with a tribal or ethnic feel. Again, like the bold necklace, make sure the rest of your outfit is more subdued/classic when wearing a dangling and dazzling earring.
Waist Defining Belt – It's a spring trend that is also a wardrobe staple. You can wear a belt over a blouse, cardigan, blazer, dress – pretty much anything you own. Buy in several different materials, finishes, and colours to add punch to an outfit, and you can’t go wrong with a black patent belt. According to Barbara Atkin, Vice President Fashion Direction for Holt Renfrew, the black patent belt is season-less and makes a strong statement.
Boots, Shoes, and Bags
Of course, no outfit is complete without the proper footwear and bag.
The Transformer Bag – Imagine a carryall that’s both a roomy tote and a sleek clutch. Well that’s what several designers are offering this year. Labels like Yves Saint Laurent and L.A.M.B. have produced a very practical bag that can be folded over to go from a tote that holds everything you need for the office, to a clutch ideal for going out for drinks. Because this bag is so adaptable it can be worn with anything and will be in style for years to come.
Strappy Shoes – Nothing says springtime quite like pair of strappy shoes. Whether they’re flat gladiator sandals or a sexy stiletto, a strappy shoe works with the skirts you already have in your closet and they’re made to be worn with that the new ankle-baring pant you just picked up. Another way to get the strappy look but in a more avant-garde form, is to try the new cut-out boots – which allow skin to peek through at the toes, heels and insteps.
The Minibag – When the night calls for something small and special, reach for a minibag. Big enough for only your ID and lipstick these tiny treasures can be compact and constructed or small and soft, both come with an extra-long shoulder strap or wrist strap for convenience.
And there you have it – the seven simple accessories to spice up your wardrobe for Spring ’09.
